Srinakharinwirot University has a long tradition in teacher education. It was established in 1949 as the Higher Teacher Training School at Prasarnmit when there was an urgent need for degree-level training for the teaching profession. The Higher Teacher Training School was the first of its kind in the country's history of teacher training. After gaining degree-granting status in 1953 the renamed College of Education had authority to grant a Bachelor's degree in Education and subsequently more programs at both the Bachelor and Master's levels were developed.
